Description

The human roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides) is one of the most common parasites in the world. Humans are the primary hosts for these parasites, with children being more common than adults. Following a parasitic invasion, ascariasis most often develops, usually latently. Migrating larvae can lead to inflammation, penetrating the lungs, causing cough, shortness of breath, and a high fever. Conglomerates of roundworms can lead to intestinal obstruction. If the roundworms migrate to the bile, pancreas, or stomach, characteristic clinical symptoms appear. Approximately 1-12 weeks after the parasitic invasion, the roundworms are excreted in the feces. Mature roundworms live for approximately 18 months.

Infection can be diagnosed:

– by microscopic examination – by detecting roundworm eggs in the feces;

– serologically – by detecting antibodies using the ELISA method.
