Description
The test is performed to determine the viral load – the number of hepatitis B virus DNA copies in the blood.
HBV viral load is a marker of viral replication activity. The test allows for a quantitative assessment, precisely
determining the number of viral copies present in each milliliter of the patient's blood. This is important for qualifying the patient for treatment, including combination therapy, and for monitoring its effectiveness. According to the recommendations of the Polish HBV Expert Group, the first HBV DNA test should be performed after 12 weeks of treatment and then every 24 weeks.
The test is performed using Real-Time PCR.
Real-Time PCR is the best tool for monitoring treatment progress. Determining the baseline
viral load is a necessary indication for initiating appropriate treatment.
