Description

The test is performed to determine the viral load - the number of copies of hepatitis B virus DNA in the blood.
HBV viral load is a marker of viral replication activity. The test allows quantitative evaluation, i.e. an accurate
determination of how many copies of the virus are in each milliliter of the patient's blood. This is important for qualifying a patient for treatment with combination therapy, among other things, and for monitoring its effectiveness. According to the recommendations of the Polish Group of HBV Experts, the first determination of HBV DNA should be performed after 12 weeks of treatment, and every 24 weeks thereafter.
The test is performed using the RealTime PCR technique.
RealTime PCR is the best tool for monitoring the progress of therapy. Determination of the baseline
viral load level is a necessary indication to initiate appropriate treatment.
