Preparation for the study

General

The test material is blood.
The patient does not need to be fasting.About 30 minutes before the test it is advisable to drink a glass of water.

The test can also be performed in men.

Description

HCG free subunit test is used for early detection and monitoring of pregnancy.

In women who are not pregnant, hCG can be produced by trophoblast tumors, tumors
Small cell tumors with trophoblastic elements and some tumors
non-trophoblastic.

Unrelated to pregnancy, elevated hCG levels are found in patients
with small-cell cancers, ovarian cancers, testicular cancers, bladder,
pancreas, stomach, lung and liver.

The test is also designed, in combination with other parameters, to assess the risk of trisomy 21 of a pair of chromosomes (Down syndrome).

It is a well-established marker to aid in the monitoring of patients with tumors
trophoblastic tumors as well as, along with AFP, patients with testicular tumors
that are not seminomas.
