Description

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a glycoprotein hormone composed of two non-covalently linked subunits: alpha
and beta. The beta subunit is specific for hCG and distinguishes it from other glycoprotein hormones that share the alpha subunit.

Free beta-hCG is used as a prognostic indicator for monitoring in vitro fertilization and embryo implantation programs,
and in maternal serum as a marker
in prenatal screening
for Down syndrome.

The analytical sensitivity of the test performed at the laboratory is 2 ng/mL, while tests with a sensitivity of less than 0.1 ng/mL should be used to monitor and detect trophoblastic tumors and testicular tumors
. Therefore, the test used at the Luxmed Laboratory cannot be used to detect and monitor cancers in men.
