Description
The test detects infection with the hepatitis C virus (HCV), which causes hepatitis C. HCV infection can be acute (symptomatic) or often asymptomatic.
Other factors, such as alcohol abuse or infection with other viruses, can influence the course of the disease. HCV is transmitted through contact with blood and blood products, as well as through sexual contact. Untreated, chronic infection with this virus can result in cirrhosis or even liver cancer. The prevalence of HCV is relatively high and often results from asymptomatic infection. Early detection, made possible by PCR testing, significantly increases the chances of recovery.
