HIV (4th generation)

• The material for testing is blood.
• The patient does not need to fast. It is recommended to drink a glass of water approximately 30 minutes before the examination.

Samples brought from outside (applies to individual patients) are not accepted for testing.

Screening for HIV infection (human immunodeficiency virus). HIV is a retrovirus and is transmitted sexually (through intercourse with an infected person), through infected blood transfusion, through the use of needles contaminated with the blood of infected individuals (drug abuse), through the placenta or blood during childbirth (perinatal infection), and through breast milk. The incubation period ranges from 0.5 to 3 or even longer years. Specific antibodies can appear after 3-8 weeks. Due to the individual nature of the immune response, it is recommended to perform the test 12 weeks after the occurrence of a potentially infectious situation. Specific antibodies are used to diagnose AIDS and HIV status.

Any reactive or questionable screening test result must be confirmed by genetic testing.

In the event of diagnostic difficulties in obtaining the result due to factors beyond the control of the Laboratory (e.g. the presence of interfering factors in the sample), the Patient may be asked to return for a blood test.
