HIV (4th generation)

• The test material is blood.
• The patient does not need to be fasting.About 30 minutes before the test, it is advisable to drink a glass of water or bitter(unsweetened) tea.

Samples brought from outside ( applies to Individual Patients) are not accepted for testing.

Screening test for HIV infection - human immunodeficiency virus. The HIV virus belongs to the retroviruses and is transmitted sexually (through intercourse with an infected person), or transfusion of infected blood, through the use of needles contaminated with the blood of infected persons (drug users) and the placenta or blood during childbirth (perinatal infection), and with breast milk. The incubation period ranges from 0.5 to 3 or even more years. Specific antibodies can appear as early as 3-8 weeks. Due to the specificity of the immune response, which is an individual factor, it is recommended to perform the test 12 weeks after the occurrence of a situation potentially threatening infection.Specific antibodies are used to diagnose AIDS and HIV carriage.

Any reactive or questionable screening test result must be confirmed by Western blot or genetic testing.

In situations of diagnostic difficulties in obtaining a result, caused by factors beyond the Laboratory's control ( e.g., the presence of interfering factors in the sample ), the patient may be asked to come again for a blood draw for the test.

In some cases, resulting, for example, from the limitations of the test method, it is not possible for the Laboratory to issue a final result. In such situations, the result of the HIV test is communicated to the patient by an authorized doctor, who provides all information regarding the result and further proceedings.
