Preparation for the study

General

The test material is blood.
The patient does not need to be fasting.About 30 minutes before the test, it is advisable to drink a glass of water or bitter(unsweetened) tea.

Important

Samples brought from outside are not accepted for testing.

Description

The test is performed to detect the presence of human leukocyte antigen B27 (HLA-B27) on the surface of cells. The test is also performed to determine the likelihood of developing an autoimmune disease that is associated with the presence of HLA-B27 such as AS(ankylosing spondylitis) and Reiter's syndrome. Both AS and Reiter's syndrome are chronic, progressive conditions that occur more often in men than women, and the first symptoms usually appear before the age of 30. Symptoms of AS include pain, inflammation and gradual stiffness of the spinal joints. Reiter's syndrome is a group of symptoms that includes arthritis, urethritis, ocular conjunctivitis and skin lesions.
