Description

Homocysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid produced in the body through the metabolism of the amino acid methionine, a common component of protein foods. It is a byproduct of the methylation process. It performs essential functions as a component required solely for further metabolism; if left untouched, it increases the risk of a number of diseases, primarily cardiovascular diseases. Proper removal of excess homocysteine from the body requires adequate amounts of folic acid, vitamins B2, B6, B12, and zinc. Indications for homocysteine testing include: - coronary artery disease - heart attack - atherosclerosis - venous thrombosis - pulmonary embolism - hypertension - overweight - smoking - elevated cholesterol - neurodegenerative diseases - renal failure - metabolic syndrome - strokes, cerebral hemorrhages - deficiencies of B vitamins and folic acid - use of hormonal contraception - type 2 diabetes - prevention of pregnancy complications - family history of cardiovascular disease. Note!!! Patients taking methotrexate, nicotinic acid, theophylline, nitrous oxide, or L-DOP may exhibit falsely elevated serum homocysteine levels.
The test is performed using the chemiluminescence method. Ordering the test constitutes consent to its performance using this method.
