Description
Calprotectin is a calcium-binding protein that constitutes 60% of the cytosolic protein of neutrophils, with bacteriostatic and fungicidal properties. It is a useful biomarker for assessing the activity of inflammatory bowel disease. Inflammatory bowel disease, which includes Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, is associated with increased neutrophilia. Fecal calprotectin testing is also useful for differentiating organic from functional gastrointestinal diseases (irritable bowel syndrome). This test is particularly recommended in children whose colonoscopy requires general anesthesia.
Detection of calprotectin in stool may also indicate disease recurrence.
