Description
Calprotectin is a calcium-binding protein that makes up 60% of the cytosolic protein of neutrophils, with bacteriostatic and fungicidal properties. It is a useful biomarker for assessing the activity of inflammatory bowel disease. Inflammatory bowel disease, which includes Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, is associated with an increase in neutrophilia. Determination of fecal calprotectin is also useful for differentiating organic from functional gastrointestinal diseases (irritable bowel syndrome). The test is recommended especially in children in whom colonoscopy requires general anesthesia.
Detection of fecal calprotectin can also be an indicator of recurrent disease.
