Description of the study
A CTG is a cardiotocographic assessment of the fetal heart rate. The result is recorded and printed on paper. The chart records the fetal heart rate and uterine contractions. A CTG allows the doctor to determine whether the baby is receiving adequate oxygen. If the pregnancy is uncomplicated and the placenta is intact, uterine contractions do not disrupt oxygen supply, and the baby's heart is functioning normally. Fetal heart rate monitoring is particularly recommended for mothers with pre-pregnancy medical conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, or nephropathy.
A CTG is typically performed in the last trimester (from 40 weeks of gestation) during a normal pregnancy or for medical reasons.
The test takes approximately 20-40 minutes and can be repeated or extended – it carries no risk, is painless, and does not require any preliminary tests or procedures.
