Description
Bile acids are the main degradation product of endogenous cholesterol produced in the liver. Bile acid concentration is a valuable indicator of liver function. It is a parameter that belongs to the so-called liver profile.
Elevated bile acid levels are observed in patients with viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. Bile acid testing is useful in diagnosing and monitoring hepatic cholestasis. This test is particularly important in cases of cholestasis in pregnant women, as maternal cholestasis poses a threat to the normal development and even survival of the fetus.
The risk of premature birth in women with blood bile acid concentrations > 40 µmol/L is estimated at 19-60%. Patient preparation is as for other liver function tests.
