Preparation for the examination

General

  • The test material is a urine sample collected (at any time of day) into a sterile urine container.
A urine container with media (Uricult, Uromedium) is not used to perform the test.

Description

This test qualitatively detects Legionella pneumophila and Legionella longbeachae antigens in human urine samples collected from patients suspected of having pneumonia. It is intended as an aid in the diagnosis of Legionella infection. A positive result for Legionella antigen in urine generally indicates a current or recent Legionella infection.
Legionella species (over 50 species and 70 serogroups have been identified) are intracellular bacteria commonly found in aquatic environments.
Nearly half of Legionella species have been associated with human disease, with Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 being the most virulent and common cause. Legionella infection can manifest itself in two main, distinct clinical forms: Pontiac fever and Legionnaires' disease. Pontiac fever is a mild upper respiratory tract infection with a nonspecific, flu-like course, which in most cases resolves spontaneously.
Legionnaires' disease is an atypical pneumonia with symptoms ranging from mild to severe pneumonia requiring oxygen administration and characterized by high mortality, mainly among patients from the high-risk group (immunosuppression, liver or kidney failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, history of smoking, patient age over 50 years).
