Description
NT-proBNP (N-terminal propeptide B-type natriuretic peptide) testing is performed in individuals suspected of having congestive heart failure, as a diagnostic aid and to assess the severity of the disease.
Natriuretic peptides are important in monitoring cardiovascular function, primarily in diagnosing left ventricular dysfunction (congestive heart failure - CHF).
This test is particularly important in patients at increased risk of CHF who suffer from hypertension, coronary artery disease, diabetes, and the elderly. NT-proBNP levels are helpful in differentiating cardiac and non-cardiac causes of dyspnea and are a good prognostic indicator of heart failure and its treatment.
