Description

The test is performed for pregnant women in the CITO mode due to the fact that the treatment in the case of a seronegative pregnant woman who has had contact with a person suffering from chickenpox consists in administering immunoglobulin VZIG (varicella zoster immune globulin) within 72-96 hours of exposure.

Depending on the duration of pregnancy, chickenpox infection can have serious consequences for the fetus.

It may cause miscarriage or premature birth.

The risk of congenital defects is 0.4% to 2.0% if infection occurs between 13 and 20 weeks of gestation. Congenital defects in fetuses infected with varicella include scarring of the skin, hypoplasia of the lower limbs, hypoplastic fingers, defects of the central nervous system and eyes, and delayed psychomotor development. Generalized fetal hydrops, dilated cerebral ventricles, and intrauterine growth retardation are also observed in varicella infection.

Varicella infection after the 20th week of pregnancy is associated with an approximately 2% risk of developing shingles within the first two years of life. Perinatal infection results in 30% of neonatal varicella symptoms. Newborns with congenital varicella infection are more likely to develop pneumonia, chorioretinitis, and seizures. Only primary infection poses a risk to the fetus, as intrafetal transmission of the virus is not observed during reactivation of the latent infection. Therefore, shingles in pregnant women does not pose a risk to the fetus because it is not accompanied by generalized viremia.
