"Determining the G20210A mutation in the prothrombin gene.
The G20210A prothrombin gene mutation – a factor II mutation – is associated with elevated prothrombin levels and the occurrence of venous thrombosis. A person who is heterozygous for the prothrombin gene mutation has a 2-5-fold higher risk of thrombosis than a person without the mutation. Hormonal contraception may increase the risk of thrombosis 20-fold. The risk of thrombosis in a person who is homozygous for the prothrombin gene mutation is unknown."
