Description

The parietal cells of the gastric mucosa produce hydrochloric acid and intrinsic factor.

Antibodies against parietal cells are detected in patients with chronic atrophic gastritis

and pernicious anemia (associated with vitamin B12 deficiency), as well as in patients with endocrinopathy and

in asymptomatic individuals. These antibodies are predominantly IgA and IgG.

Intrinsic factor is a protein produced by the parietal cells of the stomach, with transport and protective functions: free vitamin B12 binds to

intrinsic factor, protecting it from degradation by intestinal flora

and enabling its absorption in the distal small intestine.

Antibodies against intrinsic factor are divided into two types: type I antibodies react with the vitamin B12 binding site, thus blocking

complex formation. Type II antibodies bind to the factor outside the binding site, but they usually occur when type I antibodies are present,

so their diagnostic value is limited.
