Description
The Homa IR index is helpful in estimating tissue insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is a condition of reduced tissue sensitivity to insulin caused by genetic predisposition, hormonal imbalances, and obesity. It can ultimately lead to the development of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. Symptoms include chronic fatigue, increased thirst, postprandial drowsiness, increased cravings for sweets, difficulty maintaining weight, and hypertension. The test involves measuring fasting glucose and insulin levels. The resulting value indicates the severity of changes – the higher the result, the greater the insulin resistance. In a healthy individual, a Homa IR of approximately 1 indicates normal tissue sensitivity to insulin. Values above 2.5 may indicate insulin resistance. The test should be performed in individuals with obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, polycystic ovary syndrome, and in individuals at risk for diabetes or metabolic syndrome to determine cardiovascular risk. To determine insulin resistance, the Homa IR index should be measured three to four times.
Testing should be performed in the morning due to diurnal hormone fluctuations. Patients should fast for at least 12 hours after their last meal. After a night's rest, patients should avoid stress and physical exertion before the test. Drinking water is permitted. Chewing gum or sucking on soft candies is not recommended. If the patient is taking medication, it is recommended to consult with a doctor to determine whether the medication should be discontinued before the test.
The indicator is not useful in people diagnosed with diabetes.
