Description

The tests are performed by Immuno blot method. They involve the detection of antibodies against 4 Parvovirus antigens: VP1 (viral protein 1), VLP (virus like particle), VP2 (viral protein 2), NS1 (non structural protein 1).

Parvovirus B19 infections occur worldwide, mainly in spring. The virus attacks erythrocyte precursor cells, resulting in a decrease in hemoglobin in the patient's blood. In children, parvovirus B19 causes the so-called fifth disease also known as erythema contagiosum. One of the symptoms is a characteristic rash on the face, accompanied by lymph node enlargement, moderate fever and flu-like symptoms. Usually the skin lesions resolve within a week, but may recur under stress, exercise, sun exposure, bathing and changes in environmental temperature. Symptoms of infection in adults are usually more intense than in children. In 77%, symmetric inflammation of many small peripheral joints is observed (a clinical picture resembling RA).

Parvovirus B19 infection is particularly dangerous during pregnancy, as the multiplying virus inhibits the development of fetal red blood cells, causing anemia, hypoxia and fetal swelling. In about 10% of pregnant women, it can lead to fetal death. For this reason, identification of seronegative patients should be part of prenatal diagnosis and proper prevention.
