Description

Testing for antibodies against ovarian antigens is helpful in diagnosing isolated primary ovarian failure and those associated with autoimmune polyendocrinopathy. The clinical significance of these antibodies in polycystic ovary syndrome or the rare autoimmune condition ophoritis is not clearly understood.
Primary ovarian failure is characterized by impaired germ cell production and ovarian function, and affected patients are infertile (1% incidence). In some cases, an autoimmune etiology is assumed, particularly when other autoimmune diseases are diagnosed, such as Boss-Joseph's disease, Addison's disease, or insulin-dependent diabetes.
Primary ovarian failure then manifests as part of an autoimmune polyendocrinopathy.
Patients who have undergone repeated artificial insemination have increased antibodies against ovarian antigens, indicating progressive fertility problems.
