Testing of antibodies to ovarian antigens is helpful in the diagnosis of isolated primary ovarian insufficiency and running in association with autoimmune polyendocrinopathy. The clinical significance of these antibodies in polycystic ovary syndrome or rare autoimmune Ophoritis is not clearly explained.
Primary ovarian insufficiency is characterized by disorders of germ cell production and ovarian function, affected patients are infertile (incidence of 1%). In some cases, an autoimmune etiology is assumed - especially when other autoimmune diseases are found, such as Basedow's disease, Addison's disease, insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.
Primary ovarian failure then manifests itself as part of an autoimmune polyendocrinopathy.
Patients who have undergone artificial insemination several times are found to have an increase in antibodies to ovarian antigens, indicating progressive fertility disorders.
