Description
Antibodies to the desmosomes of the stratum spinosum and basement membrane of the epidermis are evaluated using indirect immunofluorescence.
These antibodies are found in autoimmune dermatoses characterized by the formation of blisters on the skin layers.
Pemphigus vulgaris is a severe disease of the skin and mucous membranes covered with squamous epithelium, progressing with deep acantholysis.
Often the first symptom is blisters in the mouth, occurring later also on the skin. As these blisters easily burst, painful erosions occur.
Untreated lesions spread to the entire skin. The presence of IgG class antibodies against desmosomes of the stratum spinosum confirms the diagnosis (prevalence 90%).
Antibody titers correlate with disease activity. These antibodies are also detected in a small number of cases of burns and drug rashes, but without clinical manifestation.
Pomphigoid bullosus is characterized mostly by itchy blisters on the skin and often inflamed skin without mucous membranes.
Patients are mostly people over the age of 70.
Pemphigus and Pemphigoid rarely occur together. Complications of these diseases include electrolyte disturbances and secondary infections.
