Description
Autoantibodies against pancreatic islets are detected in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes (type I). This is a chronic endocrine disorder of the pancreas. Autoimmune diabetes leads to the destruction of insulin-producing B cells in the islets of Langerhans.
Anti-islet antibodies are detected in approximately 90% of patients at the onset of the disease. These antibodies can be detected before the onset of early symptoms, but they do not necessarily occur later. As diabetes progresses, antibody titers decline.
