Preparation for the examination
General
- Urine should be collected before treatment begins.
For testing, a first morning urine sample should be collected.
The collected urine should remain in the bladder for at least 4 hours after the last micturition, i.e. natural urination.
After washing the reproductive organs, urine should be collected in a sterile container
(minimum quantity 5 ml)
or a container with a transport medium (e.g. Uricult, Uriline) by filling it with the mid-stream of urine, without touching its interior or rim.Urine from newborns can be collected in a bag. When using this method, it should be noted that only a negative result is diagnostically significant.
Tightly close the container and label it with your name. For transport media,
follow the manufacturer's instructions.
For patients with catheters, discuss the method of sample collection with your physician.
The collected material should be delivered to the laboratory within
2 hours of collection.
If this is not possible, store it at 4-8 degrees C until transport.
Store and ship urine in transport media (e.g., Uricult, Uriline) at room temperature for up to 8 hours. - Culture is performed for aerobic bacteria.
Important
An antibiogram is performed when pathogenic bacteria (responsible for infection) are growing – where the inflammatory process is ongoing.
Don't forget to label the sample container!
If further microbiological testing is necessary, the time to obtain the result may be longer.
For patients with catheters, the method of sample collection should be discussed with the attending physician.
To perform a general urinalysis, urine must be collected using a special vacuum-assisted collection kit – available free of charge at LUXMED Collection Centers.
