Preparation for the examination

General

  • The sample should be collected before treatment begins. The skin lesion should not be lubricated (with ointments or creams) or cleansed of cosmetics (powders).
  • The nail plate should be clean, soaked in soapy water one day before the examination, not cut for about 1 week, without nail polish (the nail polish should be removed 1 day before the examination and before soaking in soapy water).
  • Before collecting the material from the oral mucosa, at least one hour before the examination,
you should not: eat, drink sweet drinks/juices, chew gum, brush your teeth, use mouthwashes or lozenges, and smoke.
  • If a stool culture is performed, approximately 7 days before the test you should refrain
from eating blue cheese, fresh and dried fruit, honey, nuts and any
products that may be contaminated with fungi and yeast.
  • When performing a urine culture, the first morning urine sample should be collected.
The collected urine should remain in the bladder for at least 4 hours after the last voiding, i.e., natural urination.
After washing the reproductive organs, urine should be collected into a sterile container (minimum volume 5 ml) or a container with a transport medium (e.g., Uricult, Uriline), filling it with the midstream of urine, without touching the inside or rim.
For newborns, urine can be collected into a bag; when using this method, it should be noted that only a negative result is diagnostically significant.
Close the container tightly and label with your name. For transport medium, follow the manufacturer's instructions.
For patients with catheters, discuss the method of sample collection with your physician.
The collected material should be delivered to the laboratory within 2 hours of collection; if this is not possible, store at 4-8 degrees Celsius until transport.
  • In the case of scalp scrapings, do not wash your hair for 2 days before the examination
  • For cultures from swabs from intimate areas, an appointment must be made in advance.
