Semen culture

• Culture is performed for aerobic bacteria.

• The semen should be collected in a sterile container. The container with semen should be delivered to the laboratory within 2 hours. If this is not possible, the material should be preserved by collecting it on a swab with transport medium and submitted to the laboratory in that form.
• Retract the foreskin, expose the urethral opening, and clean the opening with a sterile swab. Collect semen into a sterile container or dip a swab from the transport kit into the container containing semen.

As part of the culture, an antibiogram is also performed. If the bacteria are part of the normal bacterial flora and do not warrant an antibiogram, then one is not performed.
An antibiogram is performed when we observe the growth of pathogenic bacteria (responsible for the infection) - where the inflammatory process is taking place.

If further microbiological diagnostics are necessary, the time it takes to issue the result may be longer.
