Sputum culture

• Shortly before the first expectoration, rinse your mouth with fresh running water.
  The secretions should be expectorated into a sterile container.
• The material for testing is morning sputum from the lower respiratory tract, expectorated after waking up.
• The collected material should be delivered to the laboratory within 2 hours, stored at room temperature.
  If these conditions cannot be met, a sputum sample should be collected on a swab with transport media (media can be collected at all Luxmed collection points) and delivered to the laboratory.
• Culture is performed for aerobic bacteria.

As part of the culture, an antibiogram is also performed. If the bacteria are part of the normal bacterial flora and do not warrant an antibiogram, then one is not performed.
An antibiogram is performed when we observe the growth of pathogenic bacteria (responsible for the infection) - where the inflammatory process is taking place.

If further microbiological diagnostics are necessary, the time it takes to issue the result may be longer.

Identification of infectious agents in cases of acute tracheobronchitis, inflammations coexisting with dilatation and cystic fibrosis, pneumonia, lung abscesses,
pleurisy.
