Preparation for the examination
General
- The material for testing is blood.
- The patient does not need to fast. It is recommended to drink a glass of water approximately 30 minutes before the examination.
Important
The patient should avoid any straining of the arm or hand before and during blood sampling.
Factors that may affect test results:
Medications, supplements, other substances: benzalkonium chloride, dyslipidemia.
For urine tests, the test is susceptible to interference from hemoglobin (hemolysis) at a concentration of 1000 mg/dL. For pH ranges from 3.58 to 8.03 and specific gravity ranges from 1.010 to 1.025, potassium at tested concentrations of 25.0 and 125.0 mmol/L showed interference of ≤ 10%.
Note:
Dehydration, diet, alcohol, intense exercise, or sample collection method may also affect results. Results should be considered in conjunction with other data, such as clinical symptoms, results of other tests, or clinical diagnosis.
Interference from medications or endogenous substances may affect the obtained results.
A detailed list of interfering substances is available from the Laboratory upon request (manufacturer's instructions). If in doubt, please contact the laboratory staff.

Description
Potassium K participates in nerve and muscle conduction processes (it plays an important role in the heart muscle).
Too low or too high a potassium concentration can cause conduction disorders.
The importance of a potassium test: it provides information about electrolyte balance and the dependent functioning of muscle and nerve cells, particularly important for heart rhythm regularity.
Abnormal potassium values include diarrhea, kidney disease, and cell damage leading to the release of potassium ions from within the cell into the blood serum; this can lead to falsely elevated results in hemolysis.
Factors that may influence test results:
Causes of elevated potassium levels may be related to improper intravenous therapy, dehydration, shock, ketoacidosis, and severe burns.
Ordering a test constitutes consent to its performance using indirect potentiometry.
