Preparation

Description of the study
A tetany test is otherwise known as a neuromuscular hyperexcitability test or ischemic test. The test is used to diagnose tetany, a condition that manifests itself as increased neuromuscular excitability. The test is performed using a needle electrode, which is inserted into the muscle between the thumb and index finger. An elastic band is then placed on the patient's arm for about 10 minutes to stop the flow of blood (the result is a lack of feeling in the hand and severe tingling, which is quite unpleasant). After releasing the tourniquet, it is observed whether symptoms characteristic of tetany appear.
