Preparation for the examination

General

The material for testing is blood.
The patient does not need to fast. It is recommended to drink a glass of water approximately 30 minutes before the examination.

Specific for women

Blood should be collected between days 21 and 23 of the menstrual cycle,
unless your doctor recommends otherwise.

Important

Taking supplements containing DHEA-S, used in some in vitro fertilization (IVF) protocols to improve ovarian response and IVF treatment outcomes, has been associated with falsely elevated progesterone test results, reaching clinically relevant levels of approximately 1 ng/dL.
This false positive is due to DHEA-S cross-reactivity in quantitative progesterone assays.
This should be reported to the treating physician, who should consider this information when interpreting progesterone test results.

Description

Progesterone is a sex hormone secreted by the ovaries; it reaches its highest concentration in the second half of the cycle (luteal phase); it prepares the uterine lining for implantation of the ovum. Progesterone is essential for maintaining pregnancy, raising body temperature by 0.4-0.6 degrees Celsius, which is used in natural contraception to determine fertile and infertile days.

Significance of the test: infertility diagnosis.

Altered values: pregnancy, kidney disease, adrenocortical tumor.
