Preparation for the study

General

The test material is blood.
The patient does not need to be fasting.About 30 minutes before the test, it is advisable to drink a glass of water or bitter(unsweetened) tea.

Detailed for women

Blood should be drawn between the 21st and 23rd day of the menstrual cycle
unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.

Important

Taking supplements containing DHEA-S, which is used in some in-vitro fertilization( IVF) protocols to achieve a better response from the ovaries and better IVF treatment results, is the cause of falsely elevated progesterone determination results at a clinically relevant level of about 1 ng/dl.
The falsification occurs due to DHEA-S cross-reactivity in tests for quantitative progesterone determination.
This should be brought to the attention of the treating physician, who should take this information into account when interpreting the progesterone determination result.

Description

Progesterone is a sex hormone secreted by the ovaries; it reaches its highest concentration in the second half of the cycle (luteal phase); it prepares the endometrium for the implantation of the fetal egg. Progesterone is essential for the maintenance of pregnancy, raises the body temperature by 0.4-0.6 degrees Celsius, which is used in natural contraception to determine fertile and infertile days.

Importance of the test: diagnosis of infertility.
