Description
Procalcitonin is a sensitive test for the early diagnosis of bacterial and mycological (fungal) infections.
It is considered a marker of the systemic inflammatory response, facilitating the diagnosis and monitoring of acute, severe bacterial infections and sepsis.
High PCT concentrations in the first hours of a developing infection indicate a bacterial etiology. In sepsis, PCT concentrations exceeding the reference value can be detected after just three hours.
A rapid decrease in concentrations confirms the effectiveness of treatment.
PCT can be used to detect a developing infection in its latent phase, before any clinical symptoms appear.
Diagnostic significance:
– early diagnosis of bacterial infections
– differential diagnosis of the etiology of the disease, including differentiation of severe bacterial and viral infections
– monitoring of the effectiveness of therapy
– exclusion of infection in people prepared for extensive procedures
– diagnosis of neonatal infections
– diagnosis and differentiation of the etiology of acute pancreatitis
– diagnosis of generalized infection in children with urinary tract infection
The test is performed by the chemiluminescence method
using the quantitative test "Alinity and BRAHMS PCT".
