Description
Procalcitonin is a sensitive test for the early diagnosis of bacterial and mycological( fungal ) infections.
It is recognized as a marker of the systemic inflammatory response, facilitating the diagnosis and monitoring of acute, severe bacterial infections and sepsis.
High concentrations of PCT in the first hours of a developing infection indicate a bacterial etiology of the infection. In sepsis, a PCT concentration above the reference value can be detected as early as 3 hours later.
A sharp drop in concentration is a confirmation of the effectiveness of treatment .
With the help of PCT, a developing infection can be diagnosed even in the latent phase, before any clinical symptoms appear.
Diagnostic significance:
- early diagnosis of bacterial infections
- differential diagnosis of the etiology of the disease, including differentiation of severe bacterial and viral infections
- control of the effectiveness of therapy
- exclusion of infection in patients being prepared for extensive surgery
- diagnosis of neonatal infections
- diagnosis and differentiation of the etiology of acute pancreatitis
- diagnosis of generalized jnfection in children with urinary tract infection
The test is performed by chemiluminescence
using the quantitative test " Alinity and BRAHMS PCT ".
