Description

Indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) is used to assess antimitochondrial antibodies (AMA). Frozen sections of rat kidney are the standard substrate.

If the test result indicates reactivity at a titer of 1:100 or higher, monospecific tests (e.g., ELISA, Western blot) should be performed
to determine the specific mitochondrial antigens targeted by the antibodies.

There are nine types of antimitochondrial antibodies, which can indicate various diseases. For example, M1 is primarily found in syphilis (100%), as well as in systemic lupus erythematosus
and other autoimmune diseases, recurrent miscarriages, and thrombosis. M2, M4, M8, and M9 antibodies are primarily found in primary biliary cirrhosis, and
M3 in pseudolupus syndrome induced by drugs such as pyrazolone. M7 antibodies are primarily found in acute myocarditis.
