Description

An indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) method is used to evaluate anti-mitochondrial antibodies (AMA). The standard substrate is rat kidney frozen sections.

If the test result indicates reactivity in titers of 1:100 or higher, monospecific tests (e.g., ELISA, Westernblot) should be performed,
to determine exactly which mitochondrial antigens the antibodies are directed against.

There are nine types of anti-mitochondrial antibodies that can indicate various diseases, e.g. M1 is predominantly found in syphilis (100%), as well as in visceral lupus
and other autoimmune diseases, habitual miscarriages, thrombosis. Antibodies M2, M4, M8, M9 mainly occur in primary biliary cirrhosis,
M3 - in pseudo-lupus syndrome, induced by drugs, such as pyrazolone. M7 antibodies - in acute myocarditis.
