Description
Determining autoantibodies against bile canaliculi using indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) is the second most specific test used in the diagnosis of primary biliary cirrhosis. Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) manifests as damage to the internal bile ducts, leading to cholestasis. This process leads to inflammation, fibrosis, and cirrhosis. Antimitochondrial autoantibodies (AMAs) are involved in this pathophysiology. AMA type 2 antibody testing demonstrates the highest specificity for PBC, reaching up to 95% of cases. Anti-bile canaliculi antibody testing, with a specificity of 75%, is the second most specific test in the diagnosis of PBC.
