Description

Anti-smooth muscle antibodies can be present in serum in the course of various liver diseases (chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis).
It is particularly important to determine these antibodies in the diagnosis of autoimmune chronic active hepatitis (CAH).
They can also be detected in the course of infectious mononucleosis and other viral diseases, as well as visceral lupus, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, malignant melanoma, however, they do not play an important diagnostic role. After hepatitis (viral hepatitis), antibody titers usually fall quickly.

High concentrations of anti-smooth muscle antibodies indicate chronic active hepatitis (the prevalence of antibodies is 70%).
IgG and IgM class antibody titers can correlate with disease activity. CAH occurs primarily in women and half of the cases develop before the age of 30.

Low titers of anti-smooth muscle antibodies are found in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (50%), post-alcoholic cirrhosis, biliary obstruction and in about 2% of asymptomatic individuals.
