Description
Indirect immunofluorescence can detect antibodies against striated muscle. They react with both skeletal and cardiac muscle. The presence of these antibodies serves as an additional parameter in the diagnosis of myasthenia gravis (only high titers are diagnostically significant in this disease). Myasthenia gravis is a generalized autoimmune disease caused by impaired neuromuscular transmission due to reversible
blockade of acetylcholine receptors on the motor endplate. Typical symptoms include load-dependent muscle fatigue, particularly in the eyes, face, esophagus, and limbs. Complications include paralysis of swallowing and respiratory muscles.
Antibodies against striated muscle are also detected in the serum of patients with various myopathies and in patients with chronic Chagas disease.
