Description

Antibodies to PT are a strong marker of APS.

Antiphospholipid syndrome APS (antiphospholipid syndrome), also called Hughs syndrome, is characterized by symptoms of vascular thrombosis, recurrent miscarriages along with the presence of serum antibodies with specificity to anionic phospholipids and phospholipid-binding proteins . Clinical criteria for antiphospholipid syndrome include:

1. vascular thrombosis,

2. spontaneous miscarriages.

The following hypotheses are proposed regarding the pathogenetic role of aPT:

aPTs inhibit the modulatory effect of thrombin on endothelial cells, which may impair prostacyclin release and inhibit protein C activation, aPTs recognize the PT/phospholipid anion complex on the surface of endothelial cells, which induces prothrombotic reactions involving prothrombin, aPTs may increase the affinity of prothrombin for phospholipids and thus induce thrombotic mechanisms.
