Description
antibodies are a strong marker of APS.
Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), also known as Hughes syndrome, is characterized by symptoms of vascular thrombosis and recurrent miscarriages, along with the presence of serum antibodies specific for anionic phospholipids and phospholipid-binding proteins. Clinical criteria for antiphospholipid syndrome include:
1. vascular thrombosis;
2. spontaneous miscarriages.
The following hypotheses regarding the pathogenetic role of aPT are proposed:
aPTs inhibit the modulating effect of thrombin on endothelial cells, which may impair prostacyclin release and inhibit the activation of protein C; aPTs recognize the PT/phospholipid anion complex on the surface of endothelial cells, which induces prothrombotic reactions with the participation of prothrombin; aPTs may increase the affinity of prothrombin for phospholipids and thus induce thrombotic mechanisms.
