Description

Ureaplasma urealyticum colonizes the urinary tract and genital organs, such as the urethra, vagina, cervix, prostate, and epididymis. The infection is often asymptomatic. U. urealyticum causes chorioamnionitis, which can lead to miscarriage or premature birth. Respiratory infections and meningitis can occasionally occur in newborns, particularly in underweight infants. 40-80% of women and 5-20% of men of sexually active age develop lower genital infections. Infection is transmitted through sexual contact, and in over 50% of cases, infection also occurs during childbirth.
Mycoplasma hominis causes urethritis, cervicitis, and vaginitis. It can sometimes cause mild bacteremia (e.g., after childbirth, miscarriage, or gynecological surgery) and wound infections (e.g., after cesarean section), salpingitis, amniosis, and neonatal infection.
The bacterium is primarily transmitted through the reproductive organs.
