Preparation for the study
General
- The test material is blood.
- The patient does not need to be fasting.About 30 minutes before the test it is advisable to drink a glass of water.
- Due to the possibility of false overestimation of the result, the test should not be performed immediately after biopsy, transurethral resection, palpation, sexual intercourse, competitive cycling. In such cases, the test should be performed after 48 h.
Description
The study includes determinations:
- Total PSA,
- PSA free,
- PSA free/total PSA ratio.
The test is performed in men whose total PSA level is within the range: 4-10 ng/ml (the so-called gray diagnostic zone) to differentiate between benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer. The test calculates the percentage of free PSA by comparing it with the concentration of total PSA (fPSA/tPSA x 100). The lower the percentage of fPSA, the higher the risk of prostate cancer.
Neither PSA nor fPSA levels should be interpreted as conclusive evidence of the presence or absence of cancer, regardless of the result obtained. A prostate biopsy is required for a definitive diagnosis of cancer.
