MRI of the head (brain and brainstem) with contrast at CM Luxmed Lublin

Preparing for contrast-enhanced MRI of the head requires a few additional steps to ensure the examination is safe and accurate:

Get your blood creatinine level checked – the result cannot be older than 7 days before the test.
Fast for at least 5 hours before the test; you can drink still water.

General tips for the patient:

Bring any previous test results for the area being evaluated, such as X-rays, ultrasounds, or previous MRIs.
Wear comfortable clothing without metal elements such as buttons, zippers, or belts.
Report to the MRI lab at Luxmed Medical Center Lublin approximately 30 minutes before your examination with your ID.

Description of the head resonance imaging examination in Lublin

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the head is a modern, safe examination that allows for a detailed assessment of the brain, blood vessels, and skull structures. It can be performed without contrast , which is sufficient in many diagnostic cases, or with contrast when a more detailed assessment of vessels, tumors, or inflammatory lesions is needed.

In our Lublin laboratory, we perform examinations using a modern GE MR 1.5T 450W GEM system with 32 channels. This premium MRI offers a level of diagnostics unavailable at most other facilities, without the need for a referral. Head MRI examinations in Lublin are available quickly, without waiting times, allowing for quick results and earlier diagnosis and treatment.

When is it worth doing an MRI of the head?

A doctor may refer you for a head MRI if you experience various neurological symptoms. Common causes include headaches, migraines, dizziness, fainting, epilepsy, stroke, or suspected brain tumors . This test allows for a precise assessment of brain structures and supports neurological diagnostics.

GEM (Geometry Embracing Method) technology and 32 receiving channels , even small structures are clearly visible, helping to quickly make a diagnosis. If you experience symptoms that raise concern, a brain MRI for dizziness or headaches allows you to quickly determine the cause.

Preparation for an MRI of the head at CM Luxmed Lublin

Before each examination at Luxmed Rezonans Lublin, please inform the clinic staff of all relevant health factors. This includes:

  • drug allergies,
  • kidney failure, diabetes, hypertension,
  • diseases such as myeloma or hyperthyroidism,
  • medications taken on a regular basis.

It is also important to report the presence of a pacemaker, insulin pump, metal implants, stents, clips, shrapnel, bullets, and previous bypass surgery. Information about the implant material or brand name should be included in the medical records . Additionally, claustrophobia should be reported, as this may require an individualized approach.

Weight restrictions: MRI machines at CM Luxmed Lublin allow for the examination of patients weighing up to 226 kg.

Practical tips before MRI of the head:

Bring any previous test results for the organ being examined (X-ray, ultrasound, MRI).
Wear comfortable clothing without metal elements such as buttons, zippers, or belts.
Leave metal objects, your phone, and jewelry in the changing room before entering the room.
If you take regular medications, you should take them as normal on the day of your examination.
Report to the Luxmed Rezonans Lublin 30 minutes before your scheduled examination time with your ID.

 Examination time:
A head MRI usually takes up to 30 minutes, but this time is approximate and may vary depending on the patient, including due to the administration of contrast or the performance of additional sequences.

What does an MRI scan of the head in Lublin look like?

Unlike many standard devices, our MRI is much quieter , making the examination up to twice as short and comfortable . The wide 70 cm aperture minimizes the feeling of claustrophobia, and Acoustic Reduction Technology makes the examination noticeably quieter. With 32 channels, scanning time is shorter, and 3D imaging allows for precise diagnosis.

Our device also allows for examinations of overweight individuals – the table can accommodate patients weighing up to 226 kg . This makes claustrophobia-free head MRI accessible to everyone, ensuring comfort and safety.

Contraindications to performing the test

In the MRI lab, patient safety is a priority, so before you book your appointment, check if you have any contraindications, which are divided into absolute and relative.

Absolute contraindications to magnetic resonance imaging of the head:

  • patient weight exceeding 226 kg,
  • pacemaker, pacemakers or neurostimulators,
  • pregnancy (inform the laboratory staff) – examination without contrast is possible only after assessing the diagnostic risks and benefits after the first trimester,
  • invasive surgical, aesthetic or diagnostic procedures within the last 6 weeks (you must wait at least 6 weeks after the procedure, regardless of the body part being examined),
  • metal foreign bodies in the eyeball (if in doubt, an X-ray of the eye sockets is performed),
  • insulin pump, hearing implant, internal hearing aid, ossicular plastic surgery or cochlear implant containing ferromagnetic metals.

Relative contraindications to MRI of the head:

  • the presence of ferromagnetic metals, orthodontic appliances or other metal elements in the body – examination is often possible, but may cause artifacts or local heating of tissues,
  • vascular clips – MRI can be performed 6 weeks after the procedure,
  • tattoos or permanent makeup – waiting 6 weeks after the procedure.

Contraindications to contrast agent administration:

  • severe renal failure (eGFR < 30) – testing possible only in life situations,
  • pregnancy – necessary assessment of diagnostic risks and benefits,
  • allergy to contrast agent – very rare cases.

Additional notes:

dialysis patients do not have to change the date of dialysis,

Breastfeeding: for non-contrast examinations, it is not necessary to interrupt breastfeeding.
