Description of the examination: MRI of the prostate with contrast Lublin
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the prostate in men is one of the most accurate imaging tests for diagnosing prostate cancer and prostate diseases. The contrast-enhanced version allows for better visualization of anatomical structures and potential pathologies in the organ.
The examination allows the doctor to:
- assessment of the size and structure of the prostate gland ,
- detection of cancer foci,
- assessment of tumor infiltration into adjacent tissues,
- diagnosis of metastases and complications,
- monitoring the effects of treatment or follow-up after procedures (e.g. after prostatectomy).
At CM Luxmed Lublin, prostate MRI is performed on a modern GE MR 1.5T 450W GEM device with 32 channels , which ensures high image quality, shorter examination time and greater patient comfort.
When is it advisable to perform a prostate MRI with contrast?
Your doctor may recommend a contrast-enhanced prostate MRI when detailed evaluation of lesions or post-treatment follow-up is needed. The most common indications are:
- elevated PSA levels,
- suspected prostate cancer,
- inconclusive biopsy or ultrasound results,
- planning surgical or radiotherapy treatment,
- monitoring treatment effects,
- assessment of metastases and recurrence of cancer.
What does a prostate MRI with contrast look like?
The examination lasts on average 30-40 minutes , and including preparation, the entire stay in the laboratory takes approximately 60 minutes.
The patient lies comfortably on their back, and a contrast agent is administered intravenously to enhance the visibility of prostate lesions. The examination is painless, and the staff ensures patient safety at all times.
Thanks to the wide opening (70 cm) and Acoustic Reduction , the camera operates more quietly and reduces the feeling of claustrophobia.
Preparation for prostate MRI with contrast
Prostate MRI with contrast requires special preparation to obtain the best possible image and ensure safety:
✓ Perform a blood creatinine test, no older than 7 days before the test.
✓ Fast for 5 hours before the test – you can drink still water.
✓ 15-30 minutes before the examination, take 1-2 No-spa tablets with still water.
✓ Please bring your total PSA test result with you to the examination (valid for up to 3 months).
General tips:
✓ Bring previous test results (X-ray, ultrasound, MRI) regarding the organ being examined.
✓ Wear clothes without metal elements (e.g. no buttons, belt).
✓ Please report to the facility 30 minutes before your test with your ID.
Contraindications to MRI of the prostate with contrast
Absolute contraindications to performing the test:
- weight over 226 kg,
- pacemaker/pacemaker,
- neurostimulators,
- invasive surgical, aesthetic or diagnostic procedures within the last 6 weeks (you must wait at least 6 weeks after the procedure, regardless of the body part being examined),
- metal foreign bodies in the eyeball (if in doubt, an X-ray of the eye sockets is performed),
- insulin pump or other drug delivery device, neurostimulator or other biostimulants,
- hearing implant, internal hearing aid or ossicular plastic surgery cochlear implant (if it contains ferromagnetic metals).
Relative contraindications:
- the presence of ferromagnetic metals in the body,
- Orthodontic appliances and other metallic foreign bodies in the body – the possibility of performing the examination should be consulted with the laboratory! In most cases, they are not a contraindication to the examination. Metallic foreign bodies may cause local artifacts, partially hindering the assessment of adjacent structures, or (rarely) cause heating of adjacent tissues – the examination may then be interrupted. In such cases, there is no threat to the patient's life or health
- in the case of vascular clips, an MRI examination can be performed 6 weeks after clip implantation,
- In the case of a tattoo or permanent makeup, you must wait 6 weeks after it has been done.
Contraindications to the administration of a paramagnetic contrast agent :
- severe renal failure (if eGFR < 30 – examination possible for life-saving indications),
- allergy (extremely rare cases).
Attention:
- dialysis patients – there is no need to postpone the dialysis date.
FAQ – Prostate MRI with contrast Lublin
How long does a prostate MRI with contrast take?
A contrast-enhanced prostate MRI scan takes an average of 30-40 minutes , depending on the number of sequences performed and the scope of the diagnostic workup. Preparation time—completed medical questionnaire, contrast administration, conversation with staff, and changing—must be factored in. Therefore, it's recommended to allocate approximately 60 minutes . The examination is performed in a comfortable environment, with the patient lying still in a supine position. Thanks to the modern GE MR 1.5T 450W GEM system at Luxmed Lublin Medical Center, the examination is quieter, shorter, and more comfortable for patients.

What does a prostate MRI with contrast detect?
Magnetic resonance imaging of the prostate is currently one of the most accurate imaging tests for diagnosing prostate cancer. It allows for the assessment of the size and structure of the prostate gland, as well as the detection of changes that may not be visible on ultrasound. The examination allows the doctor to:
- recognize prostate tumors and assess their nature,
- check whether the tumor is infiltrating adjacent tissues,
- assess the effectiveness of treatment (surgery, radiotherapy, hormone therapy),
- follow up patients after prostate surgery or biopsy.
Thanks to the use of contrast, it is possible to precisely visualize the organ being examined.
Why is the examination performed with contrast?
Intravenously administered contrast enhances the visibility of prostate structures and adjacent tissues. This improves MRI clarity, allowing the physician to accurately assess the activity of the lesions. Contrast is particularly useful in diagnosing prostate cancer because it reveals the degree of tumor vascularization—a key parameter in differentiating between cancer and benign lesions. Contrast-enhanced examinations also allow for monitoring treatment effectiveness and detecting potential tumor recurrence.
Does prostate MRI replace biopsy?
Prostate MRI does not replace biopsy, but in many cases it can avoid it or reduce the number of unnecessary biopsies. Prostate MRI indicates to the physician precisely which areas should be examined histopathologically, allowing for a more targeted and less invasive biopsy. A final cancer diagnosis still requires histopathological confirmation, but MRI is a key tool in planning further treatment.
Do I need a referral?
You don't need a referral for a prostate MRI at Luxmed Lublin Medical Center if you're having the test done privately. This is very convenient – you can quickly schedule an appointment, which means you'll receive the results faster. A referral is only required for tests reimbursed by the National Health Fund (NFZ). In such cases, a referral will be issued by a specialist.
Is the examination painful?
A prostate MRI with contrast is a completely painless . The patient may experience minor discomfort due to the need to remain in one position for several dozen minutes. The only invasive element is the intravenous administration of contrast, which involves a brief prick, similar to a standard blood draw. The contrast itself is well tolerated, and allergic reactions are rare.
Can I have a prostate MRI if I am claustrophobic?
At CM Luxmed Lublin, we perform examinations using a modern MRI scanner with a wide opening (70 cm) and a short tunnel, which reduces the feeling of confinement during the examination. This allows claustrophobic patients to feel safer, and the examination itself is easier to tolerate. The machine is also quieter thanks to Acoustic Reduction . If you are severely claustrophobic, it's worth informing the staff before the examination.
