Description
The rubella IgG antibody test is helpful in determining seroconversion to the rubella virus, especially in women of reproductive age.
The presence of rubella-specific antibodies indicates prior vaccination or infection and indicates probable immunity.
The presence of rubella-specific IgM antibodies usually indicates the acute phase of the disease.
Rubella is a childhood disease; if contracted during pregnancy, it can cause congenital infection, even leading to death.
People in the early phase of infection do not have detectable levels of IgM antibodies; they become detectable only a few days after the appearance of a rash or vaccination. IgM levels peak within 3–6 weeks and then gradually decline over a period of months.
NOTE:
Pursuant to the Regulation of the Minister of Health of 26/06/2020 (Journal of Laws of 2020, item 1118), a positive test result is subject to mandatory reporting by the Laboratory performing the test to the District Sanitary and Epidemiological Station.
