Description
The rubella IgG antibody test is helpful in determining seroconversion to rubella virus, especially in women of childbearing age.
The presence of rubella-specific antibodies indicates a history of vaccination or infection and indicates probable immunity.
The presence of IgM class antibodies specific to rubella antigens, usually indicates the acute phase of the disease.
Rubella is a childhood disease, being present during pregnancy can cause congenital infection with consequences even leading to the death of the child.
People in the early phase of infection do not have detectable amounts of IgM antibodies, they only become detectable a few days after the appearance of the rash or vaccination. IgM levels peak at 3 to 6 weeks and then gradually drop over a period of months.
