Description

Rubella virus causes a common infectious disease in humans, typically accompanied by a blotchy rash. The disease usually lasts for a short time, and complications are rare. However, rubella can be harmful to the fetus if the mother becomes infected during pregnancy. Rubella virus is teratogenic, and infection can lead to very serious developmental defects, especially in the first month of pregnancy. Therefore, it is crucial to determine the patient's immunity before pregnancy, if possible, to administer a vaccine, or, if this is not possible, to monitor the pregnancy for seroconversion.

In some cases, testing for IgM antibodies is not sufficient because the presence of antibodies of this class may result from persistent IgM antibodies or an asymptomatic secondary infection caused by rubella virus, which does not pose a threat to the fetus.

For this reason, measurement of IgG antibody avidity is recommended, as avidity has been shown to be low during the acute phase of infection and to increase over time. The presence of low-avidity antibodies therefore indicates a recent or current infection.
