Description
SHBG is a sex hormone-binding globulin. It is synthesized in the liver. It has a high binding affinity for testosterone and 5-dihydrotestosterone and a slightly lower affinity for estradiol.Decreased SHBG levels are common in hirsutism (excessive body hair), juvenile acne and polycystic ovary syndrome. Elevated SHBG levels can occur in patients with hyperthyroidism and cirrhosis. In addition, high SHBG levels are associated with many other conditions including pregnancy.
