Preparation for the examination
General
- The material for testing is blood.
- The patient does not need to fast. It is recommended to drink a glass of water approximately 30 minutes before the examination.
Description
SHBG is a sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). It is synthesized in the liver. It has a high binding affinity for testosterone and 5-dihydrotestosterone and a slightly lower affinity for estradiol. Reduced SHBG levels are common in hirsutism (excessive hair growth), acne vulgaris, and polycystic ovary syndrome. Elevated SHBG levels may occur in patients with hyperthyroidism and liver cirrhosis. High SHBG levels are also associated with many other conditions, including pregnancy.
