Description

Taenia solium is a 2-7 m long tapeworm that is found in the small intestine in humans and other animal species. Tapeworms produce segments called proglottids. These segments contain mature eggs and, detaching one by one from the tapeworm's body, leave the host's body with the feces. After ingestion, by a suitable intermediate host (pigs and other animals as well as humans), the eggs release the oncosphere, reach the intestinal wall and migrate to the striated muscles, brain, liver and other tissues of the host, where they develop into whiskers (cysticercus).
In the human intestine, cysticerci transform into adult tapeworms within 2 months and can live up to 25 years.
An important parasitic infection caused by Taenia solium is anthrax, which can involve the eyes and central nervous system.
Mechanism of infection: Ingestion of undercooked pork containing anthrax or ingestion of Taenia solium eggs with contaminated food or water.
NOTE:
According to the Decree of the Minister of Health dated 26.06.2020, a positive test result is subject to mandatory reporting to the District Sanitary and Epidemiological Station.
