Description
Taenia solium is a 2-7 m long tapeworm found in the small intestine of humans and other animal species. Tapeworms produce segments called proglottids. These segments contain mature eggs, which detach one by one from the tapeworm body and leave the host in the feces. Once ingested by a suitable intermediate host (pigs, other animals, and humans), the eggs release an oncosphere, reach the intestinal wall, and migrate to the striated muscles, brain, liver, and other host tissues, where they develop into cysticerci.
In the human intestine, cysticerci develop into adult tapeworms within two months and can survive for up to 25 years.
A significant parasitic infection caused by Taenia solium is cysticercosis, which can affect the eyes and central nervous system.
Mechanism of infection: Consumption of undercooked pork containing blackheads or consumption of Taenia solium eggs with contaminated food or water.
NOTE:
Pursuant to the Regulation of the Minister of Health of June 26, 2020 (Journal of Laws of 2020, item 1118), a positive test result is subject to mandatory reporting by the laboratory performing the test to the District Sanitary and Epidemiological Station.
